Pentax WG-8

Tough design

Part of the PENTAX WG series, this compact digital camera is designed to be tough, offering robust usage in outdoor pursuits. It is waterproof, shockproof, and cold-resistant, with an operating temperature between -10°C and 40°C. Plus, the compact and lightweight casing, at only 215g, provides a unique stability that can withstand almost any activity - including dives down to a depth of 20 meters. 

High-quality images

The WG-8 boasts a top sensitivity of ISO 6400 and produces super-high-resolution images with approximately 20 effective megapixels. This is achieved by combining a cutting-edge back-illuminated 1/3" CMOS image sensor, which provides high sensitivity, quiet operation, and fast data readout, with a high-performance imaging engine for optimal image quality. 

Fivefold zoom lens

The five-times optical zoom lens offers a zoom range coverage from the wide angle of 5mm to 25mm (28mm to 140mm equivalent in the 35 mm format). This range of focal lengths allows for everything from beautiful close-ups and exciting portraits to expansive landscape photography and nature shots in the telephoto range.

The lens construction itself consists of 11 elements (including 5 aspherical) in 9 groups, working with the sensor to get you sharp, clear, and high-resolution images. 

Features such as face recognition for humans and pets let you stay focussed on your subject, while a minimum focus distance of 1cm opens up the option for macro shooting. 

In addition to the impressive optical zoom capabilities, the PENTAX WG-8 also features an intelligent zoom function. Depending on the selected resolution, the zoom range can vary from 7x at 10 MP up to approximately 40.5x at VGA resolution for full versatility when shooting at a distance. 

Brighten your shot

A built-in flash can make up for the lack of natural light in an image, and when used with the innovative Hand-held Night Snap mode, it will automatically capture several images to produce a single, blur-free composite photograph.

Additionally, a powerful ring light with six LEDs can be used at a macro distance to show even the smallest subjects of your photography at a larger scale. 

4K recording

The WG-8 enables 4K resolution movie recording using the H.264 format, allowing for the capture of high-quality film clips (3840 x 2160 pixels, 30 frames per second). Alongside the standard Movie SR (Shake Reduction) mode, the device also features the new Movie SR+ mode, which mimics the effects of a gimbal, to create smooth and high-quality video during more fast-paced activities.

Shoot and edit

This WG camera provides multiple metering techniques for autofocus and exposure control. Photographers have a wide selection of exposure options, including 18 scene modes that let you choose the most appropriate settings for fine-tuning your subject, such as the new depth-of-field composite mode. Additionally, the camera offers 12 digital filters, giving photographers the freedom to unleash their creative expression. 

When in a time crunch, the WG-8 offers two memory locations that can be called up via the function dial for you to save your favourite settings. 

3.0-inch LCD monitor

The camera's wide-angle range can be useful for controlling the image’s frame. However, those who have the time and opportunity to adjust the image settings in a calm environment, or who want to review photos/videos later, will appreciate the quality of the large, brilliant monitor.

The WG-8 is equipped with a sizable, high-resolution 3.0-inch LCD monitor (3:2 aspect ratio, approximately 1,040,000 dots). It features a protective cover with anti-reflection (AR) coating, to minimise any glare or reflections, ensuring a sharp, clear image on the screen, even in strong sunlight. Additionally, the Outdoor View setting allows the user to adjust the monitor's brightness to optimise visibility in changing light conditions, granting you an accurate representation of the image before it’s captured. 

For precise framing, the WG-8 even offers an electronic spirit level to check the camera's horizontal/vertical tilt.

Advanced GPS

A built-in GPS module and digital compass automatically record your position and travel log data onto the captured images as well as adjusting the built-in clock to local time for accurate image-embedded records that you can go back to. 

Webcam function for live-streaming

By switching the WG-8 to its UVC (USB Video Class) mode and connecting it to a computer using the USB cable provided, it can be utilised as a web camera for real-time streaming of Full HD-resolution video at 30 frames per second. Ideal for online business meetings or private online communications.

The web camera function does not provide an audio feed, so users will need to rely on their computer’s built-in mic for audio communications at online meetings.
